St. Luke’s Medical Center – Quezon City Strengthens Legacy of Excellence with JCI Reaccreditation

Posted on Aug 01, 2025

St. Luke’s Medical Center – Quezon City made history as the first hospital in the Philippines and the second in Asia to obtain Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation in 2003. This milestone established Quezon City as a benchmark for healthcare quality in the region. In 2016, it became the first and only hospital in the country to be designated by JCI as an Academic Medical Center, reflecting its integrated model of patient care, medical education, and research.

St. Luke’s - Quezon City has maintained its Gold Seal of Approval through successive reaccreditations. In 2019, it underwent a week-long onsite assessment and was reaffirmed as an Academic Medical Center under JCI standards. At that point, the hospital had accumulated a total of seven Gold Seals: four for hospital accreditation and three for Academic Medical Center status.

Transition to 8th Edition Standards: A Global Leap

In July, JCI officially released its 8th Edition of Accreditation Standards for Hospitals and Academic Medical Centers. These more rigorous standards emphasize new dimensions such as environmental sustainability, healthcare technology (e-health records, telehealth, cybersecurity), patient safety culture, health equity, and expanded sentinel event policies. They are organized into five key sections: Accreditation Participation Requirements, Patient-Centered Care, Healthcare Organization Management, Global Health Impact, and Academic Medical Center Standards. Effective January 1, 2025, all reaccreditations are conducted under the 8th Edition framework.

Reaccredited Under 8th Edition: Commitment Reinforced

The successful reaccreditation of St. Luke’s - Quezon City under the 8th Edition is more than just a badge of quality—it demonstrates that, as an Academic Medical Center hospital, it continues to exemplify the integration of clinical excellence with medical education and accredited research.
