What is Photon-Counting CT? 

Think of the difference between watching a movie in standard high definition and in ultra-high definition (UHD). Both provide clear images, but UHD reveals finer details that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Photon-Counting CT represents a similar leap in medical imaging.

Unlike conventional CT scanners, which first convert X-rays into light before producing an image, Photon-Counting CT directly detects individual X-ray photons and measures their energy. This more efficient process reduces image noise, improves spatial resolution, and provides exceptionally detailed images that help physicians evaluate even the smallest anatomical structures with greater confidence.

One of the unique advantages of Photon-Counting CT is that spectral imaging is automatically active with every scan.

Traditional CT primarily produces grayscale images. Photon-Counting CT, however, also captures information about the energy of each X-ray photon, providing additional data about the composition of different tissues. 1. Better Assessment of Coronary Artery Disease

Many patients with coronary artery disease develop calcium deposits within their coronary arteries. On conventional CT scans, these calcium deposits can appear larger than they actually are—a phenomenon known as calcium blooming artifact—which may obscure the true size of the vessel lumen.

The ultra-high spatial resolution of Photon-Counting CT substantially reduces blooming artifacts, allowing physicians to better visualize the coronary arteries and more accurately assess the degree of narrowing. In appropriately selected patients, this may reduce the need for invasive diagnostic coronary angiography.

2. Improved Evaluation of Coronary Stents

For patients who have previously undergone coronary angioplasty with stent placement, regular follow-up is important.

Metallic stents can create artifacts on conventional CT that make it difficult to evaluate the inside of the stent. Photon-Counting CT reduces these metal-related artifacts and improves visualization of the stent lumen, allowing physicians to more confidently assess stent patency and detect recurrent narrowing when present.
