123 Years of St. Luke's: From a Humble Beginning to a Global Standard of Care

Posted on Oct 11, 2026

Rooted in service. Driven by excellence. Recognized by the world.

In 1903, St. Luke's began not as a landmark hospital, but as a humble dispensary in Calle Magdalena, Tondo, Manila—the Dispensary of St. Luke the Beloved Physician, established by the Episcopal Mission to provide care to those in need.

From a nine-bed ward in 1905 to a 52-bed hospital by 1910, St. Luke's steadily grew while remaining committed to service. By the 1930s, it was already recognized as one of the country's best-equipped hospitals and received the government's "Model Hospital" award in 1938.

St. Luke's moved to its new home in Cathedral Heights, Quezon City, in 1959. The new facility brought expanded capabilities, including specialized units and treatment technologies for its time.

In 1975, St. Luke's became an independent non-stock, not-for-profit organization. This structure reflects a noble philosophy: resources are directed toward advancing the institution's mission—investing in people, technology, education, research, and capabilities that ultimately benefit patients. That philosophy has helped St. Luke's bring increasingly advanced healthcare to the Philippines, from sophisticated diagnostics and complex surgery to highly specialized medical programs. It has invested not only in state-of-the-art technology, but also in the physicians, nurses, specialists, and healthcare professionals trained to maximize it.

The facilities changed. Medicine evolved. The institution grew. But the commitment to care remained. Excellence, in other words, is not simply achieved. It is continually reinvested.

From Philippine Excellence to Global Standards

St. Luke's pursuit of international excellence reached a defining milestone in 2003, when St. Luke's Medical Center–Quezon City became the first hospital in the Philippines and the second in Asia to receive Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation. In 2016, it became the first hospital in the Philippines to receive JCI accreditation as an Academic Medical Center Hospital, integrating patient care, education, and research. St. Luke's Global City achieved JCI accreditation in 2012, only two years after opening.

Its commitment to international healthcare extends to medical tourism. In 2024, the Department of Tourism designated St. Luke's as the lead medical tourism facility in the Philippines, recognizing its advanced technologies, comprehensive services, and highly skilled professionals.

In 2025, St. Luke's became the first and only hospital in the Philippines to receive Global Healthcare Accreditation (GHA) for its Medical Travel Program, achieving 95% overall compliance, with all standards assessed as Fully Compliant.

These distinctions represent more than international recognition.

They demonstrate that world-class healthcare can be delivered right here in the Philippines.

And the World Took Notice

In the Newsweek and Statista World's Best Hospitals 2026 ranking, St. Luke's Medical Center was ranked #1 in the Philippines and among the Top 250 hospitals globally, in a ranking that evaluated more than 2,500 hospitals worldwide. The recognition places St. Luke's alongside internationally respected institutions such as Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, and Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Its specialized expertise has also gained international recognition. In Newsweek and Statista's Best Specialized Hospitals Asia Pacific 2026, St. Luke's Global City was ranked #1 in the Philippines in Cardiac Surgery, Oncology, Orthopedics and Pediatrics, while St. Luke's Quezon City ranked #1 nationally in Neurology and Neurosurgery. St. Luke's was recognized as the Philippines' best hospital for specialized care.

For St. Luke's, however, global recognition is not the destination. It is a responsibility to keep becoming better.

Global Excellence, Filipino Roots

What makes the St. Luke's story remarkable is that becoming globally recognized never meant leaving its roots behind.

The institution that began by serving people in Tondo has evolved into a medical center capable of providing internationally benchmarked care to Filipinos and patients from around the world.

For 123 years, St. Luke's has been part of generations of Filipino families—caring for children who later became parents, and for parents who returned with their own children. That continuity is more than a history. It is a legacy of care passed from one generation to the next.

123 Years—and the Journey Continues

A 123rd anniversary is not simply a celebration of longevity.

It is a celebration of what can happen when an institution remains faithful to its purpose while continuously investing in the future.

From a small dispensary in Tondo to a hospital recognized among the World's Best Hospitals.

From serving a local community to becoming the Philippines' lead medical tourism facility.

From humble beginnings to advanced technology, specialized expertise, and international standards.

The journey has always been forward—but never away from where it began.

To care. To serve. To heal. To keep becoming better.

From Tondo to the world. From one generation to the next. St. Luke's continues to make what is best in healthcare possible—right here at home.
