Should I have a colonoscopy done?

Many patients often ask the question: “What is the earliest manifestation of colon cancer?” The answer in most instances is not a thing. This is because Colon Cancer in the early stages is usually so miniscule as to cause any problems. The presence of “red flag” signs and symptoms like anemia, weight loss, severe constipation, and even blood in the stools usually signifies a more advanced stage of the malignancy. By then, it is often too late.

The good news is that colon cancer is preventable. A Colonoscopy is the best examination to check for small growths called “polyps” and early colon cancer. With this test, polyps as small as 2 mm, and even flat polyps which are usually missed by CT scan, can be detected. It is important to identify and remove benign polyps since these have a possibility of transforming into a malignant tumor. A Colonoscopy allows the Gastroenterologist to examine the whole length of the colon and makes it possible for polyps to be removed.

So who needs a colonoscopy? When should you have it done?

  • Patients who are 50 years and older with no family history of Colon Cancer and have no symptoms are recommended to undergo a screening colonoscopy.
  • For patients who have “red flag” signs and symptoms, a colonoscopy is a must.
  • Those who have a 1st-degree relative diagnosed with colorectal cancer or adenomatous polyp/s should have a Colonoscopy at the earlier age of 40 or 10 years younger than the youngest affected member in the immediate family.
  • Members of families that have a strong history of Colon Cancer and polyps need a Colonoscopy at an even earlier age (sometimes even as young as 10-12 years old).
  • Individuals who have a personal history of Colon Cancer or colon polyps also require regular surveillance Colonoscopies and should discuss with their gastroenterologist.

Please remember that:

  • Colon Cancer is preventable.
  • Colonoscopy helps detect and prevent Colon Cancer.
  • You should have your Colonoscopy done at a center where a large volume of the procedure is performed annually and where the doctors are certified experts and the equipment is topnotch. St. Luke’s Medical Center Global City has a group of highly qualified gastroenterologists and high-resolution Colonoscopes which are the most efficient in detecting small and flat polyps.
  • Do not hesitate to consult a Gastroenterologist regarding concerns about Colon Cancer. It is preventable, beatable, and treatable, so awareness and early action against Colon Cancer can definitely help save lives.
